AHH I can’t decide on a college/major! Help Please!?
I go to High School in Massachusetts, so I know the schools are tougher than most states and I know personally that the schools push you really hard, and I am SICK of it! I really have a passion for interior design and I also have been thinking about becoming a realtor and I really want to go to college in the south (Like Georgia, North Carolina etc.) but my dad has been telling me that with either of those jobs I wouldn’t be reaching my full potential. (he pushes me a LOT) I know I probably shouldn’t listen to him, but I can’t shake the feeling of knowing he’s right and maybe I should just go to college in Massachusetts or New York and major in business? What do you guys think? Thank you so much for answers!
Do what you love. Take a moment and forget all the frustrations of majors and minors going through your head, parents, school, just forget about it. Think about what would make you happy. Imagine what you can imagine spending hours outside of a classroom studying, working on, and after that doing the job for years to come. Pay attention to how you feel, not about what other people want or what makes the most sense. If you think about the idea of studying business and feel an internal groan, then its not for you. On the other hand, if you feel a thrill, a sense of excitement then its for you. Think about interior design, think about the coursework. Does it sound exciting? Interesting? Or boring and like it will just make you want to sleep? If its exciting, then do that.
Don’t do something because you feel "it makes more sense" do it because its what you love. If you do what you truly love, then ultimately you will be the better for it.
Do whatever makes you happy! You’re the one that’s going to have to be doing this career for the rest of you life, so don’t do something you don’t like just because you are capable of it. If your unhappy with what you decide to do you’re going to be miserable your whole life. And college is a good opportunity to travel away from home and experience living somewhere else on your own, and if you don’t like where you go in the south after a year or two, you can always transfer back home!

LikeDislikeIf you major in business and you don’t know why, that’s just going to lead you to a job that you work and you don’t know why.
If you want to pursue interior design, schools like Virginia Commonwealth University have a very competitive program. From here, you need to see if you have a background in the arts because that will be a requirement. Your first year will most likely be studio art classes of every media, art history courses and theory of art classes. If you have no desire to learn about things like that, then interior design may not be for you. You rarely begin an area of concentration without a solid base in art.
If you’re interested in becoming a realtor then business is not the only option. A major in communications can also apply and you can focus your electives in a minor in business. Communications will allow you to take some major-core courses, but also a variety of electives that can further focus your interests. There may be a lot of major changing, so maybe you should research several curriculum requirements for the school you want for the few majors you are interested in and take the courses that overlap so you are not left scrambling to fill in credits in your senior year of college.
It’s a lot of planning on your part, but it’s best to do it before you delve in and on the brink of running out of money.

LikeDislikeLook, if you push yourself to something you don’t want to do then that’s the only way you won’t reach your full potential. Otherwise then do what you have a passion for as long as its something that has a good average number of job openings and as long as it brings you more than $20/hr (at least).
In college you will get to learn more about what you want to do, so don’t push yourself to decide immediately until your third semester, by then you should have a choice. So in your first year you should take a business course to see how you might like it.
An interior designer is not bad at all. Its the kind of job that many people can fall in love with and it brings home a decent amount of money. Also if you go to college in New York for that then you will have great internship and job opportunities.
Lastly, don’t be a realtor, don’t do that to yourself! Please research more on it and shadow someone, I guarantee you there’s a 90% you will not want to do it. This is my honest opinion, sorry if it sounds too extreme.
Good luck!

LikeDislikeListen to your dad.
He is correct, and your idea of being a real estate agent and interior decorator is more than a little unrealistic. Most likely you will be unemployed and standing in line at a soup kitchen.
Incidentally, if your dad pays for your education, he gets to say what you take… Don’t cross him.
